Bought with a Price: The Renewed Mind, the Temple Body, and Freedom from the Old Masters

One of the most powerful and personal statements in the New Testament is found in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (literal rendering):

“Have you not known that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit in you, which you have from God? and you are not your own, for you were bought with a price; glorify, then, God in your body...” (adapted from Young’s Literal Translation / interlinear Greek).

And again in 1 Corinthians 7:23: “With a price you were bought, become not servants of men.”These verses are often read as a future-oriented promise of salvation and a heavenly home.

But they point to something even more immediate and transformative — something that begins right now in the mind and flows outward into the body. The Meaning of “Bought with a Price” The Greek word translated “bought” (ἠγοράσθητε — ēgorasthēte) carries the imagery of the ancient slave market. Christ didn’t just forgive us — He purchased us outright from a captor. Our minds are now able to be one with the Good, which transcends throughout everything we are and do, both in body and spirit.

  • This is present ownership, not only future hope.

  • The price was His own blood — the ultimate ransom.

  • Because of this purchase, we are no longer slaves to "missing the mark", the world, or the adversary in the same way.

The immediate context in 1 Corinthians 6 is a strong warning against sexual immorality. Paul’s logic is powerful: Your body is no longer yours to do with as you please — it is a sacred sanctuary, and you’ve been bought at the highest cost.

The Greek Picture of Sin

Right before this passage, Paul writes about sin using the word ἁμαρτία (hamartia) and its forms — the most common New Testament term for sin. It literally means “to miss the mark” (like an archer failing to hit the target). Every "sin" misses the mark of God’s best for us, but Paul highlights something unique about sexual immorality: it is a sin against one’s own body. This sets up the temple teaching perfectly. When we miss the mark, we defile what has been purchased and made holy.

The Fallen Mind Before Redemption

Before Christ’s work, Scripture describes the human mind as deeply damaged:

  • Romans 1:21 (literal): “...they became vain in their reasonings, and their senseless heart was darkened.”

  • Ephesians 4:17-18 (literal): “...that ye no more walk as the other nations walk, in the vanity of their mind, being darkened in the understanding...”

  • 2 Corinthians 4:4 (literal): “...the god of this age did blind the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the illumination of the good news...”

The Fall didn’t make us guilty — it clouded and corrupted our thinking. Our adversary gained significant influence over the human mind: deception, accusation, temptation, and mental bondage. Many people live with anxious, obsessive, fearful, or self-deceiving thought patterns and assume it’s just “how they are.” But what if much of that fog was part of the old dominion?

The Cross: Liberation of the Mind

Christ’s death and resurrection were a decisive victory over the powers that held the mind captive:

  • Colossians 2:15 (literal): “Having stripped the principalities and the authorities, He made a show of them openly, having triumphed over them in it [the cross].”

  • Hebrews 2:14 (literal): “...that through death He might destroy him having the power of death — that is, the devil...”

  • John 12:31 (literal): “Now is a judgment of this world; now shall the ruler of this world be cast forth.”

The “price” paid didn’t only cover our guilt — it broke the enemy’s legal right and oppressive influence over those who belong to Christ. We are transferred out of the domain of darkness into the kingdom of the Son (Colossians 1:13 — “who did rescue us out of the authority of the darkness...”). This is why believers can now say with Paul: “We have the mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:16, literal).

The Renewed Mind — Available Right Now

Redemption brings an already / not yet reality:

  • Already: “If any one is in Christ — a new creature; the old things did pass away, lo, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17, literal). The Spirit indwells us. We have access to the mind of Christ. The kingdom of God is in our midst and can be experienced inwardly.

  • Not yet: Full perfection awaits the resurrection and the new creation.

Because of this, we are commanded to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2, literal). This isn’t something we achieve by our own spiritual effort or secret knowledge. It is received by faith in what Christ has already done and then cultivated as we walk with the Spirit. The renewed mind is not a future reward we must ascend to — it is a present gift flowing from the purchase price.

Body as Temple: When the Mind Is Renewed, Actions Follow

This is where everything comes together.

Because your body is now the sanctuary of the Holy Spirit, and because your mind is being renewed, the whole temple begins to reflect its Owner.

  • Renewed mind → transformed thinking

  • Transformed thinking → changed desires and choices

  • Changed choices → holy actions in the body

Paul connects this explicitly in Romans 12:1-2 (literal):

“I call upon you, therefore, brethren, through the compassions of God, to present your bodies a sacrifice — living, holy, well-pleasing to God — your intelligent service; and be not conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind...”

This is the biblical version of “as within, so without.”

What rules the inner sanctuary (the mind/heart) eventually manifests in the outer courts (our words, habits, sexuality, relationships, and daily life). The cross made this possible. The Spirit makes it actual. We cooperate by taking every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5 — “bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of the Christ”) and yielding to the Spirit’s leading.

The True Miracle We Wake Up To

What if the death and resurrection of Jesus didn’t primarily secure a future home in heaven, but more so purchased present liberation of both mind and body?

  • The mind is no longer ultimately owned by the old masters.

  • The body is no longer a slave to sin but a living sanctuary.

  • The adversary no longer has the same level of access or authority.

This is the miracle many experience as an inner awakening: clarity where there was fog, peace where there was anxiety, freedom where there was bondage. It begins now — even while we still await its full consummation. We glorify "God" (reflecting the best version of our intended design) in our bodies because we were bought with a price. The renewed mind leads the way, and the whole person follows.

The Renewed Mind was the true, and dare I say likely primary gift of Heaven that we were given with immediate availability.
